Extra Details
Ballybunion is a coastal village in north Kerry, 9 miles from the town of Listowel. The beaches near Ballybunion also are a popular surfing site. Other traditions include the beachside Seaweed Baths, featuring sea water with kelp. In summertime cooked periwinkles are salted and served in small paper bags along with a pin to extract the small sea snails.
The beach on the right features impressive tidal caves that can be explored at low tide. There are two commonly used beaches in Ballybunion, divided by the cliff atop which stands the ruined castle. The beach to the left of the castle (if looking toward the sea) is called the "Men's Beach", and the one to the right the "Women's Beach". There is a small cafe, hot seaweed baths and ice cream shop on the women's beach. The large cliffs to the right of the women's beach has shallow caves.
The sheer cliffs over the beach have a scenic walking path, featuring a blowhole, and breathtaking views of Sea Stacks and a multitude of wildlife. It takes about 20 minutes to walk, and brings you round to the "Nun's Beach", a beautiful beach with no access that is overlooked by a convent.
The Village itself contains mostly pubs and amusements, fast food restaurants etc., a playground for young kids and a supermarket, a small Garda Station and a statue of Bill Clinton that looks like it's been moulded from marzipan as opposed to sculpted.
There is a new state of the art enclosed out door playground overlooking the ladies Beach
Enjoy an Irish "seisiun" or traditional session, which takes place in some of the town's many pubs
Seaweed Baths:
The natural goodness of bathing in salt water brings welcome relief to general muscular stiffness, tension, arthritic and rheumatic pain. The bath owners hand pick the seaweed daily from the "Blackrocks". The water provided for your bath is sea-water, pumped straight from the Atlantic Ocean each day. This is heated and ready for you at the turn of a tap.
Golf
Ballybunion is home to the Ballybunion golf course, a world renowned golf links that is ranked in the top ten golf courses in the world. Further afield you can try the links in Tralee or hop on the car ferry at Tarbert over to Clare and test your handicap at Doonbeg or Kilrush golf clubs
